Talent Show and Eggstravaganza

Today was a fun day. We started the day with the Eggstravaganza which is an event where students build contraptions to hold eggs while they are dropped from a height.

Later we had a talent show.

The pictures are a little blurry. Sorry!

Poetry

Our class has started their poetry unit and some funny, touching and visually striking poems are being written by students.
Here are some pictures of our rose drawings and one of the accompanying haiku poems.

Students are working on projects on a class poetry website. If your child has shown you his or her Google Classroom account at home, your child should also be able to show you our poetry website. Feel free to visit the site to see what your child is expected to accomplish this term in poetry.

Space Inquiry Projects

Division Five spent some time after spring break finishing up their inquiry projects on space topics. These projects took a variety of forms and I was very impressed with how hard the students all worked. Below are some of the projects students completed on-line as well as some pictures of projects students completed in more hands-on ways.

Back from Spring Break

This morning we had parent reading. Parents came to the school to read to the students. This time, the vice principal and a parent helper read The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novack to the school. We liked the part of the book that read, "Never read this book again! It's ridiculous."

We went outside to do some obstacle courses for DPA. Students teamed up and created obstacle courses for other students to do.

This week, we also got Chromebooks to use in the classroom. We have to log in and put in a password to use them.

Earlier this week we also started learning the Folk dance and the May Pole dances.

Spring Break

It has been a very busy week leading up to Spring Break. We saw a mother cow named Libby and a baby cow named Charlie. They were part of the mobile dairy that came to our school. The mobile dairy taught us about cows and how they are milked.

This is Libby with Anna and Grace.

This is a picture of Charlie, the baby cow.

This is the milk machine that hooks up to the mother cow's udder.
This is the food that the cows eat.

We also made little leprechauns with a pot of gold and conducted a mini inquiry project on St. Patrick's Day. If you look on the pots of gold you will see our writing.

At the end of the week we all went swimming.

Have a great spring break everyone!

Wear Pink Anti-Bullying Day

We've been quite busy over the last few weeks and haven't had much time to update our blog, but I couldn't let our Wear Pink Anti-Bullying Day go without a mention.

Last week, students were entertained at an assembly completely put together by another class. The theme of the assembly was anti-bullying, and their message was to be kind to others. Students all over the school wore pink and messages of kindness were displayed throughout the school gym.

Some students from Division 5 with the collaborative kindness poster we created.

While I don't claim to have all the answers to stopping bullying, I do believe that acknowledging that it happens and talking about it can help. Division 5 watched a reading of Bullies Never Win by Margery Cuyler and talked about what the protagonist went through. I've posted it here in case anyone wants to re-watch it.

Have a very kind week everyone!

February 1 to 5

This week at school division 5 is completing a brochure on BC. Included in it is information on BC weather, activities and plants and animals. The brochures also include an explanation why we have seasons on Earth.

Our school also had visiting lacrosse coaches teach us some fun lacrosse skills and activities.
