I ask students to prepare a bibliography when conducting any research. The following outlines my expectations for recording bibliographic information. The intent here is simply to get students into the habit of recording where they look for information, not to teach a specific method of citation, which is beyond this level.
Writing a Bibliography
There are many different ways to write a bibliography. As you move forward in your education, you will find that different subjects want different things included. For now, all I want is for you to get into the habit of writing down your sources. Below is a quick reference guide for you when you write a bibliography.
If your information comes from a book:
Write the author’s name (last name first) and the title of the book. The title
should be underlined, using a ruler.
Example: DuPrau, Jeanne. The City of Ember
If your information comes from a website:
Copy and paste the website onto your bibliography page.
If your information comes from a magazine:
Write the name of the magazine and the date it was issued.
Example: Owl, March, 2010
If your information comes from an encyclopedia:
Write the name of the Encyclopedia and the year it was issued.
Example: World Book, 2010
If your information comes from a textbook:
Write the name of the textbook and the copyright date.
Example: Connections Canada , 2010
If your information comes from a person:
Write the name of the person and the date of the interview.
Example: Ms. Smith, October 1, 2010
If your information comes from any other source, contact the teacher.
