Axe Capoeira, Sports Day, Speeches and Dioramas

These are the volunteers who came to teach us the Brazilian martial arts & dance program Axe Capoeria.
For Science, we did dioramas of the biomes that we researched for our inquiry projects. We finished on Tuesday. Here are pictures of some of the biomes.

These are pictures of students delivering their speeches during the annual McBride Speech competition. Everyone did a great job delivering their speeches to an audience of around 200 parents, students and judges.

(Sorry about the blurry speech pictures!)

May Day and Track Meet

On May 25, 2016 our school participated in the May Day celebration at Queen's Park. Grade 4 did the May Pole dances and Grade 3 did the Folk dances.

This is the top of one of the poles used for the May Pole dance. The decoration represents New Westminster.

Two students dressed up for May Day.

On May 27 we had our annual track meet. At the track meet, students come together to run multiple races. Students can win ribbons based on how they place.

Of course, we still had lots of work to do during the other days.

Health and Career Education

The grade 4's have been learning about the damage smoking can cause this term. As a wind-up, they created comics using the Make Beliefs Comix comic generator. Here's one created by a student:

If you can, take some time to talk about smoking with your fourth grader today. I'm hoping you'll be impressed with how much information they have.

May Poetry

This week our class completed our poetry oral presentations. All the presentations were on really great poems.

ZL's favorite presentation was the one done on the Missing Piece by Shel Silverstein.

By ZL and RK

The students were hard at work this week completing their poetry assignments, including their oral presentations which will be posted to the poetry website early next week. Please check back here for the link.

In the meantime, you might want to have your child read to you one of the following poems:

(If you click play to the right, a video of Neil Gaiman reading the poem will play.)

We've spent a lot of time discussing the meaning of each poem and making connections to each stanza. Please ask your child to explain one connection he or she has to a line or stanza from either poem.

Finally, just for fun, here's a video of the Missing Piece by Shel Silverstein.

Talent Show and Eggstravaganza

Today was a fun day. We started the day with the Eggstravaganza which is an event where students build contraptions to hold eggs while they are dropped from a height.

Later we had a talent show.

The pictures are a little blurry. Sorry!

Poetry

Our class has started their poetry unit and some funny, touching and visually striking poems are being written by students.
Here are some pictures of our rose drawings and one of the accompanying haiku poems.

Students are working on projects on a class poetry website. If your child has shown you his or her Google Classroom account at home, your child should also be able to show you our poetry website. Feel free to visit the site to see what your child is expected to accomplish this term in poetry.

Space Inquiry Projects

Division Five spent some time after spring break finishing up their inquiry projects on space topics. These projects took a variety of forms and I was very impressed with how hard the students all worked. Below are some of the projects students completed on-line as well as some pictures of projects students completed in more hands-on ways.
